I want to preface this post by letting you know that I do not receive any type of compensation for writing about specific food products. I am always trying new, healthy foods and get so excited when I find ones I love and want to report back to you and give you the scoop!
I am not a vegetarian. Yes, I love vegetables and eat tons of them, but I still enjoy meat sometimes too. That said, since I don’t make meat the ‘star’ of every meal, I like finding delicious alternatives.
Enter neat– a healthy replacement for meat.
I first tried this at the Healthy Living Expo I went to in September and I couldn’t believe how delicious it was. But you know how sometimes you try certain foods when you are out, but then when you try to recreate them at home they don’t taste as good? I had to see if this was one of those instances so I purchased it when I got home.
I bought the mexican mix, because my family lives for taco night. It was super simple to make. All I did was pour it in a bowl, mix in 2 tablespoons of water, 2 eggs, and then add it to a non-stick skillet and brown it for about 7 minutes just like I do with ground beef or ground turkey.
The directions suggested adding 1/2 cup salsa to it after it’s cooked. I actually added an ENTIRE 10 oz. jar of salsa AND a can of black beans for some extra substance and protein.
I then took a tortilla, spread some shredded cheddar cheese on it, put some of the ‘meat’ on it, topped it with sliced avocado, chopped tomatoes, and shredded lettuce, rolled it up, and WOW! I couldn’t believe how good it was! My husband dug it, too. Unfortunately my kids couldn’t eat it because it has nuts in the ingredients.
The ingredients are as follows: pecans, garbanzo beans, organic whole grain gluten free cornmeal, onion, garlic, sea salt, and spices. That’s IT.
I should warn you – it comes in a powder form, which may seem a bit weird, but don’t judge it till you try it!
We had leftovers so the next day I used it to make a mexican salad, which basically was all of the ingredients I just mentioned sans the torilla.
If anyone tries the other flavors before I do, please let me know how they are!
I love this product! I told my kids they were eating chopped meat and they didn’t question it. They thoroughly enjoyed it! It’s now a staple in our house.
I’m so glad!!
